Essential December 2025 Tax Deadlines: Plan Ahead

December is a pivotal month for closing the tax year strategically. It’s time to finalize your year-end tax planning and address key areas like tip reporting, mandatory IRA withdrawals, and paying deductible expenses for the 2025 tax year.

December 1 - Kickoff Year-End Tax Planning

December signals the last opportunity to strategically influence your 2025 tax outcomes. If you've experienced substantial income shifts, changes in personal circumstances like marital or dependent status, or sold significant assets in 2025, it's imperative to schedule a tax planning session today.

December 10 - Report Tips to Your Employer

For employees who earn tips, it’s crucial to report any tips exceeding $20 for November to your employer using IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Be aware that FICA and income taxes for these tips will be withheld from your wages. Should your wage be insufficient to cover these withholdings, the uncollected amount will appear in box 8 of your W-2, necessitating payment when you file your annual return.

December 31 - Deadline for Mandatory IRA Withdrawals

Ensure you make any required withdrawals from your Traditional IRA accounts, particularly if you were born before January 1, 1952. Born within January 1 to December 31, 1952? This year marks your first required distribution, though you may defer it until April 1, 2026. Arrange withdrawals by December 31 if your institution closes on this day.

December 31 - Final Day for Deductible Expense Payments

Secure any outstanding deductible expenses for 2025 no later than December 31. Note this does not apply to IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions, which are eligible after this date.
